Plot:

After surviving the Battle of Corinth in 1863, Newton Knight, a poor farmer from Mississippi, lead a group of anti-slavery Confederate deserters in Jones County, and turns them against the Confederacy during the Civil War. Later Knight marries a former slave, Rachel, which significantly helps in establishing the region’s first mixed-race community.
